Choosing an OEM bra manufacturer is not only about finding a factory that can sew a bra. For a custom lingerie brand, the more important question is whether the manufacturer can translate your reference product, cup shape, padding, materials and design requirements into a repeatable product that can eventually move into bulk production.

Bras are highly three-dimensional garments. Two styles can look almost identical in photographs while using different cup molds, foam thicknesses, padding positions, underwires, wing fabrics and elastic tensions. These differences can significantly change fit, support, cleavage and comfort.

For this reason, the best OEM development process usually begins with more than a picture. A physical reference bra, combined with your original design and clear modification instructions, gives the factory a much stronger technical starting point.

1. Start With a Physical Reference Bra Whenever Possible

A Tech Pack and product photographs are useful, but a physical reference bra communicates information that cannot always be measured from an image.

The factory can physically evaluate the cup profile, cup depth, padding distribution, underwire shape, cradle construction, wing stretch, strap position and overall proportions.

This is especially important for molded, padded and push-up bras.

For example, a customer might ask for a lightly padded push-up bra. That description can refer to several different constructions. One bra may use thin graduated padding concentrated at the bottom. Another may place additional volume toward the bottom and outer side. A third may use a different molded cup profile altogether.

All three can look similar in an ecommerce photograph while producing noticeably different results when worn.

Your reference sample does not need to match the final design exactly. It can simply represent the characteristics you want to preserve.

You might tell the manufacturer: Keep the cup shape and fit similar to this sample, but change the outer fabric, widen the straps and redesign the back.

That is much clearer than asking the factory to make something similar from a picture.

2. Clearly Separate What You Want to Keep and What You Want to Change

A useful OEM brief should distinguish between the reference features and the new design features.

For example, your development notes might say:

KEEP: cup shape, padding effect, underwire shape and band fit.

CHANGE: neckline, lace, strap width, back design, hardware color, labels and packaging.

This gives the development team a clear framework.

The physical sample explains how the bra should physically behave. Your Tech Pack or design explains how the new product should look. Your modification list connects the two.

3. Cup Shape Is One of the Most Important Development Decisions

There is no universal bra cup.

An OEM bra manufacturer may work with many different molded cup shapes, foam densities, thicknesses, padding placements and neckline profiles.

A cup can vary in projection, height, bottom volume, side volume, apex position and overall curvature.

For push-up products, padding position is particularly important. Adding more foam does not automatically create a better bra. The location and shape of the padding influence how the breast is lifted and positioned.

An everyday push-up bra may need a more natural effect than a fashion cleavage style. A smooth T-shirt bra may prioritize a clean rounded shape under clothing rather than dramatic enhancement.

This is why the factory needs to understand the desired wearing effect, not only the outside appearance.

4. Cup, Underwire and Cradle Must Work Together

Underwire selection should not be treated as an isolated detail.

The wire, cup and cradle need to work as a system.

Underwires can vary in width, height, curvature, length and flexibility. Changing the wire can influence breast positioning, side coverage, center-front fit and comfort.

A reference sample allows the development team to examine how these components work together instead of guessing from photographs.

For wireless styles, the same principle applies to internal support structures, cup shaping, lining and band tension.

5. Materials Need to Match the Intended Performance

Once the construction is understood, the next step is material selection.

A bra can contain many different materials even when the finished product looks visually simple. These may include outer cup fabric, cup lining, foam, power mesh, wing fabric, strap elastic, bottom-band elastic, hook-and-eye, rings, sliders and decorative trims.

Material choice affects much more than appearance.

Changing the wing fabric can alter band tension. Changing the cup material can affect stability. A softer elastic may feel more comfortable but behave differently under load. A stretch lace may require different construction from a stable lace.

6. The First Sample Is a Development Tool

New brands sometimes expect the first sample to be identical to the final production product.

In practice, the first prototype is often used to identify what still needs adjustment.

You may discover that the cup needs more projection, the upper cup is slightly loose, the band is too tight, the strap position needs to move or the padding effect needs to be reduced.

These observations are exactly what physical sampling is designed to reveal.

A drawing cannot fully predict how a three-dimensional bra will behave on the body.

The goal is not necessarily to finish development in one sample. The goal is to efficiently reach a production-ready specification that can be reproduced consistently.

7. Give Specific Sample Feedback

Clear feedback can reduce unnecessary development rounds.

Instead of saying, The cup is wrong, describe where the difference appears.

For example: The cup is slightly too shallow near the apex compared with our reference sample.

Instead of saying, More push-up, explain the desired effect: We want slightly more upward and inward lift while keeping the padding comfortable for everyday wear.

Photos with arrows, measurements and numbered comments are extremely helpful.

It is also useful to keep a sample revision record so that both the brand and factory know what changed between V1, V2 and V3.

8. Avoid Changing Every Major Variable at the Same Time

Suppose Sample V1 arrives and the customer changes the cup, padding, underwire, fabric, band tension, neckline and elastic all at once.

Sample V2 may feel completely different, but it becomes difficult to know which modification caused which result.

A more controlled development process prioritizes the most important fit and construction changes first, then refines secondary visual details.

This is particularly important when changing fabrics because different stretch and recovery can alter the fit of the same pattern.

9. Understand Sample Cost Versus Bulk Unit Price

Sample pricing and bulk production pricing are not directly comparable.

A development sample can involve material sourcing, pattern work, cup selection, cutting, individual sewing, technical review and revisions for only one or a few pieces.

Bulk manufacturing spreads many production costs across a larger quantity.

Final unit pricing can also depend on materials, construction complexity, cup type, trims, quantities, packaging and other specifications.

10. Private Label and OEM Are Related but Not Always Identical

Brands often use OEM and private label interchangeably, but the amount of customization can vary substantially from project to project.

Some brands begin with an existing factory construction and customize fabrics, colors, labels and packaging.

11. Different Bra Categories Require Different Development Priorities

12. What Happens After the Final Sample Is Approved?

Once the fit, construction, cup, materials and appearance are approved, the project can begin moving toward production.

The next steps may include final specification confirmation, size grading, material confirmation, color approval, labels, packaging, pre-production preparation, bulk manufacturing, quality inspection, packing and shipment.

The approved sample becomes an important physical reference for production.

This is why sample approval should not be treated casually. A clear final specification helps reduce ambiguity when the order moves from development into larger-scale manufacturing.

13. What Should You Send to an OEM Bra Manufacturer?

For the most efficient development process, prepare as much relevant information as possible.

An ideal starting package may include a physical reference bra, original design or Tech Pack, sample size, intended size range, modification list, fabric preferences, colors, logo artwork, labels and packaging requirements.

If you do not have every technical specification yet, clearly describe the desired product performance and identify which characteristics of the reference bra are most important.
